Land was divided into three categories: for the government, the gods and the people. Each married couple was given a [G 18 / topo] of land (about one acre), and they received an extra topo for each son and half a topo for each daughter they had. The remainder of the land, which made up the majority, was for the state and the gods.
Fields were marked by boundaries and it was strictly forbidden to remove these barriers. This pattern was an old one. Before the [G 11 / Inca] Empire, lands were cultivated communally for the local chiefs and priests, e.g. for the state and the church. The lands given to the gods were the most important and were cultivated first. Even the emperor took part in the cultivation, followed by all the officials and the peasants.
There were separate storehouses for the state and for the gods. State produce supported the nobility and officials who did not farm the land (artisans and craftsmen), the army and the aged, infirm and widows. State produce was also used in times of famine. When there was surplus produce, it was distributed amongst the people. The religious produce fed the priests and was used in ceremonies to the gods.
